7 Supplements for Healthy Bones and Joints

July 9, 2015

Joint pain is a problem reported by many of our patients. In fact, it’s usually what brings them to our office in the first place. Since most of the internet is littered with misinformation and advertisements, here’s our recommendations on the best supplements for your healthy bones and joints.

7 Supplements for Healthy Bones & Joint Pain Relief

  • 24463.1.f7036baf9a81777bba1d858cc9d5bb6fCalcium & Vitamin D – People who don’t get enough calcium may lose bone mass faster and fracture bones more easily. And at least one recent study found that vitamin D may be the key to efficiently absorbing and using calcium, and thus, to healthy bones (Journal of the American Medical Association, November 9, 2005).
  • Glucosamine and chondroitin – These two supplements are from substances naturally found in healthy cartilage. Research suggests that glucosamine sulfate – alone or in combination with chondroitin sulfate – appears to relieve pain, improve joint mobility, and slow osteoarthritis-related damage to the joints.
  • Turmeric, Ginger, and Boswellia – Natural anti-inflammatory compounds may work as well as aspirin and ibuprofen for treating osteoarthritis. Follow package directions and give it at least two months to fully feel the benefits.
  • SAMe This naturally occurring molecule (S-adenosy-L-methioine) delivers sulfur to your cartilage, which helps build strong joints. Research suggests that SAMe may be as effective as drugs like aspirin and ibuprofen at relieving joint pain and improving function (Journal of Family Practice, May 2002).

*Please consult your physician before incorporating any new supplements into your diet. Drug interactions with any medications you may be taking should be evaluated by a trained professional.
