Physical Therapy is a health profession that combines the “science of healing and the art of caring” to treat movement dysfunctions. A physical therapist performs a comprehensive analysis of movement, which includes identifying joints dysfunction, tissue limitations, muscular imbalances and structural pathologies. In order to assist patients, physical therapists use a variety of methods to create changes in tissue and movement patterns to ultimately restore function. Treatment consists of skilled manual therapy (hands on) with therapeutic exercise that simulates daily movements to rehabilitate the body, restoring maximal mobility and optimal mechanical motion, as well as provide preventative care.
Abilities and functions can be impaired due to various causes, which can significantly impact one’s quality of life. Several diagnoses that PT can help significantly include stroke, traumatic brain injuries, neurological diseases, arthritis, surgery or an injury, which can all limit one’s ability to generate optimal motion. At Spine and Sports Medicine of HoHoKus our staff is trained to evaluate each person and design an individualized treatment plan to allow each patient to return to activities important in their lives.
Spine and Sports Medicine of HoHoKus is committed to providing the highest level of progressive and comprehensive care. Our physical therapists perform an eclectic integration of approaches best suited for each client including gait, posture, balance and functional training, joint mobilization, muscle energy techniques, myofascial release, and trigger point work. Each client is under constant supervision during their visit by trained specialists. At Spine and Sports Medicine of HoHoKus we help people change movement patterns to improve restricted daily habits of movement, gain strength and range of motion, while rehabilitating from injuries, orthopedic problems, or neurological conditions. We place a great emphasis on designing and teaching patients home exercise programs to develop muscular strength and coordination, improve joint function, and implement correct body mechanics.
All of our physical therapists are licensed health care professionals. Prior to practicing they must obtain a Master and/or Doctorate of Physical Therapy from an accredited education program and pass their state board exams to be licensed. They have extensive training in anatomy, physiology, bio mechanics, neurological sciences, disease and injury pathophysiology in addition to skilled therapeutic treatment application. In addition, physical therapists attend continuing education courses to stay abreast of the latest medical developments and treatment approaches.
Each physical therapy session lasts about one hour; however, the frequency of the appointments varies for each patient.

On your first visit the Physical Therapist will take a thorough history, conduct an evaluation of the entire body including posture &biomechanics, range of motion, joint mobility and tissue textures to find out the cause of pain or disability. A treatment plan toward recovery and health with short and long term goals will be discussed with each client and a customized treatment plan will be devised.
Many patients may think that they know how to properly exercise, manage their pain and rehabilitate themselves. I have commonly been given explanations from patients for why they do not need therapy – for example, “I have had this before and I know what works for me” or “I know what is causing this, because my neighbor had the same thing so I will just do what she did” and attempt to manage themselves.
We accept most insurances including Medicare.
