Treatable Conditions

What Is Chiropractic Care?

chiropractic_adjustmentChiropractic care is a natural and non-invasive approach that helps to get your health back on track. It is all based on the fact that your body is a self-healing organism that is controlled by the spine and the brain. When the vertebrae becomes misaligned, it can affect the nervous system and it can also cause your tissue and organs to malfunction as well. Chiropractic medicine helps you to treat the problem without actually having to use any drugs.

We are constantly welcoming new patients to our clinic and we have plenty of experience treating the below problems:

At SportsMed Physical Therapy we frequently treat individuals with problems such as:

  • Headaches
  • Joint Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Low Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Spinal Disk Conditions
  • Tendonitis
  • Sprains
  • Strains

Of course, there are many more conditions that we can treat and they are not all limited to the above selection. We also have the training needed to treat things like allergies, digestive disorders and even asthma as well so you know you can count on us and our team to get you fit and healthy again in no time at all. Why don’t you contact us today to find out what we can do for you?

We Can Help

Chiropractic care can help you with a number of symptoms and problems and even though we have listed a few of them here, there are plenty of others that you need to watch out for. If you find that you are experiencing any of the below problems, please find the time to call us up today and we will do everything that we can to help.

Did you know that 80% of headaches actually originate in the neck? This is normally because there is a lot of stress on the neck and this combined with tension in the shoulders can cause you to tense up without even realising it. This can all cause your vertebrae to misalign, causing pressure on the nerves in your spine. With a neck originating headache, you will normally feel pain at the base of the skull which then spreads to your temples, your eyes and your forehead.

Low Back and Neck Pain

Subluxations remain to be one of the most common causes for lower back pain. When the vertebrae is misaligned, it can put pressure on your spinal nerves and this can cause you even more pain. After this has been put in motion, you may also experience muscle spasms and this can add to the pressure that you are already experiencing. Of course inflammation then occurs, and the cycle starts all over again. You may find, in some instances that you can relieve the pain by stretching and massaging but this doesn’t do anything for the underlying problem.

Disc Problems

The discs in your spine are small pads of cartilage that can be found between the bones in your spine. The centre of these discs are made out of a soft jelly like substance but they are protected by fibrous tissues. Think of each disc as being a spacer, a shock absorber for the spine. When the discs are healthy, they can bend and turn normally, but when they aren’t healthy, they can cause you real problems in the future. Spinal discs have a very poor blood supply so they count on joint circulation so they can bring in nutrients while also expelling waste. If your joints lose their normal motions then the action is impaired and the disc then starts to deteriorate. Think of it as being a wet sponge, if it is healthy, it is flexible but if it is dry, it is hard and stiff and this can lead to cracks at a later date. This is how a lot of problems begin.

The way each disc is attached means that it can’t slip out of place. If you experience a trauma or an injury to the spine however then they can bulge and rupture. This can be very painful and it can also put pressure onto the spinal cord and any attached nerve roots. This, in turn, interferes with their function so it really is something that you need to get treated. Many patients have managed to avoid surgery and pills by attending chiropractic care sessions.

Whiplash is normally the result of a trauma from a car collision. When the head is jerked back and beyond the normal limit, the muscles react and they can even tear under the intense pressure. The pulpy discs that are between the spinal cord can also tear or become swollen as well, causing the vertebrae to move out of place. This not only reduces the range of motion, but it can also cause a lot of pain as well. This is especially the case if you have a soft tissue injury with nerve damage. On top of this, the instability of the spine can then lead to blurred vision, pain in the shoulder and neck and even lower back problems. The main thing to consider in this instance is that you may not see the results of this until months later, because your body is trying to adapt to the new alignment.

Our chiropractic approach will help your spine to return to its normal function. We can also help to recommend a series of visits that will restore the motion back to your body and the spinal bones, reducing scar tissue and swelling wherever possible.

Arthritis is a condition that involves the gradual breakdown of the cartilage found between the joints. It is very common in the joints that bear a lot of the weight, such as the hips, knees and back. It is also very common in the neck and the hands as well, but after the joint has broken down, it can lead to stiffness and increased strain as well. You will also find that as the joint functions, it can lead to compensations and this can place additional strain on other parts of the body as well. Of course, degenerative chances are very common with those who are older but that doesn’t mean that it results in pain for everybody. There has been a lot of research lately that shows that the joint is responsible for the pain, but it is the effects of the degeneration that control how well the joints function. We can help you to restore the overall level of function for your joints by helping you to increase your ability and mobility. In addition to this, we can also assess how the body is functioning as a whole as this will help you to progress naturally and at a pace that you are comfortable with.

Joint Dysfunction

Joints are designed to move. When this movement becomes impaired, a lot of problems can arise. Some of these include stiffness, muscle tightness, degeneration and pain. Joint dysfunctions are more common in the spine and it can happen for a number of reasons, some of them being scar tissue, muscular imbalance or even poor posture. We will help to assess the movement in your joints as well as helping you to treat any underlying factors that may be contributing to the problem as well.

The sciatic nerve is the long nerve that starts in the lower back before it extends down into the leg. When this nerve becomes irritated, it can cause pain and numbness. It can also cause you lower pain in the back and leg as well. A misaligned vertebra can also cause your joints to inflame and again, this can put pressure on the nerve. Eventually this can even lead to bulging discs and spasms as well, but you may need to undergo an evaluation in order for this to be diagnosed completely.

Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve is exactly what you’d think it is. It is a nerve that has been compressed, normally by a misaligned vertebra. When this nerve becomes inflamed, the muscles can spasm and this can cause you even more discomfort in general. You may not even be able to move that part of the body, so you can already see how this can cause you problems if you don’t get it treated.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Millions of American’s have jobs that have damaging effects on the hands and the arms. Repetitive movements that are not performed with a good posture can cause micro-trauma in the hands and the wrists. This combined with joint dysfunction and spinal problems can eventually result in carpal tunnel syndrome. This is when the nerve which is affected travels from the finger, into the shoulder and up to the neck. This then connects with the spinal cord, so you can experience different symptoms depending on how severe your injury is. You may experience wrist pain, weakness, numbness, burning and even loss of function.

This condition is somewhat controversial and it can be difficult to understand at first. If you want a proper diagnosis then you may need to consider going to your doctor. After your examination and a number of specialised tests, you will be able to find the cause of your symptoms and a treatment plan that is suitable for your needs. You will also find that joint and soft tissue manipulation is very helpful in terms of relieving pain from this and other related conditions as well, but if this is not suitable there are other treatment options available. Some of these include ultrasounds and electrical muscle stimulations sessions. You may need to combine some of the above with a healthy eating routine and some herbal medicine but overall you should certainly see the benefits when you choose a chiropractic method of treatment.

Maintenance Care

What a lot of people don’t realise is that you don’t need to be physically injured in order to benefit from chiropractic care. After all, you could see an increase in your posture, your mobility, your energy and even your immune system. Everyone can see different results, but one main thing that brings people together is that they just feel better in general. If you are taking pain medication, or if you experience constant headaches, please do contact us today to see if we can help.

Consult SportsMed Physical Therapy before enduring constant headaches, depending upon addictive pain medication, or submitting to surgery.

What Causes Pain in the Lower Back?

Lower back pain can be caused for a number of reasons, from injury to aging and everything in-between. It is important to know that the spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae, which is made up from bone. You will also find soft discs that are fully designed to protect the bone while also absorbing shock, but a lot of back problems occur when the discs degenerate and bulge out of the vertebrae, pushing down on the nerves and causing pain.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is based on the understanding that your health depends on the functionality of your system. It also means “treatment by hand” and it looks to address any diseases or issues that may be impacting your movement and your overall health. Chiropractic care often avoids the use of drugs and other chemicals by instead locating and adjusting the musculoskeletal areas in the body, naturally relieving pain.

What Is A Subluxation?

This happens when one, or in some instances more, of your spinal bones are misaligned. This interferes with your nervous system and the body’s ability to heal itself.

What Conditions Can Benefit From Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is normally designed for those who experience lower back pain, but it has been effective in treating neck pain, shoulder pain and even back pain.

What Is An Adjustment?

An adjustment is a thrust that is delivered by a hand. This is designed to correct any subluxations that are affecting your health.

Do These Adjustments Hurt?

Not at all, in fact, they may even feel great. When you begin to receive your adjustments, there is a high chance that you will look forward to them and you’ll feel so much better afterwards as well.

What Sounds Are Made During A Chiropractic Adjustment?

The cracking or popping sound is not your spine, contrary to popular belief. It is actually gas that rushes into the space when your joints are separated. Not all chiropractic techniques produce this noise and most don’t produce it at all.

Is It Bad For Me To Crack My Neck A Lot?

This is a question that a lot of people ask. If you have the desire to crack your neck then there is a chance that a part of your spine is jammed, causing another area to move too much, thus leading to the crack or pop. You may feel better after doing so, but chances are the need to crack will come back because you are not adjusting it properly, because only a chiropractor can do this. If you do crack/pop your neck a lot, please do come in to see us, even a chiropractor cannot adjust their neck themselves and we’d be more than happy to help.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Yes. Chiropractic adjustments are completely safe.

Why Do My Children Need Chiropractic Care?

When a child is born, they often experience subluxations. The spine of an infant is very soft and somewhat undeveloped and during the birth, it can suffer trauma. In fact, your baby may experience over 80lb of pulling pressure as it exits the birth canal, and when they grow up, the injury done to their spine increases. This is because they learn how to walk, jump, twist, bump, run and crawl, and over time this can cause some real damage. Some children won’t show signs of being subluxated until later life, but chiropractic care can help to give them a more responsive body and a more balanced flow of energy as well.

What Education Do Your Chiropractors Have?

Our chiropractors have a very high level of education that focuses on neuromuscular treatments. They also have training in the anatomy, biology, theoretical studies, diagnosis, clinical training and so much more.

Do I Need To Talk With A Physician Before I Commence Chiropractic Care?

Not at all, we a have a physician on-hand and they can issue you with prescriptions.

What Can I Expect When I Come To Physical Therapy For Chiropractic Care?

Our physical therapy clinic is the perfect environment if you want to nourish and heal your body, your mind and your soul. When you come and visit us for the very first time, we will give you an evaluation over your entire body. This will include your posture, range of motion and your joint mobility as well. Upon doing this, we will then provide you with a treatment plan that will help you to get back on track with your day to day activities so you can feel better from the moment you come and pay us a visit.

Do You Need To See A Chiropractor For The Rest of Your Life?

Not at all, you benefit from it as much as you want to. We are all responsible for our own actions and the quality of our health, and by doing regular exercise with your treatments, you can be sure to feel healthier and better in no time at all.

I Don’t Have Any Symptoms Anymore, Should I Continue With My Treatment?

Yes. Just because you don’t have any symptoms, doesn’t mean that your subluxations are okay. Sometimes some of our patients come in and they have spinal decay which has developed over a number of years. This is all down to the stress that you experience in your lifetime and the longer you wait before you get it checked out, the more risk you expose yourself to. Of course, it is completely up to you how and when you take chiropractic care sessions and it is also up to you if you decide to stop going to them or not, but if you do stop your sessions when you feel “fine”, you may find that you experience the same problems again at a later date. Those who come in and continue their sessions however experience far better results and they, in most cases, avoid additional trauma and stress.

Are There Any Studies That Show The Effectiveness of Chiropractic Treatment?

With all medical treatments, there is always evidence that supports it and there have been several studies that show that chiropractic treatments are effective when it comes to relieving back pain. Some of the more recent studies have also shown that chiropractic treatment is effective in treating migraine headaches and infantile colic as well.

What Should I Wear?

Try and wear loose fitting clothing that does not restrict your movement in any way. This will allow our therapists to get to the areas required when performing your treatment.

What Do I Need To Bring With Me To My First Appointment?

The first time you come and attend your session, you will need to bring your insurance card with you. We have a physician on-hand who can give you a prescription if this is required, so you really don’t have anything to worry about.

What Insurance Policies Do You Accept?

We accept most insurance policies and this does in fact include Medicare.
